RUMPUS emerged from community meetings with Adelaide’s independent theatre artists.
The independent theatre scene has long struggled with atomisation; isolated artists and companies facing the same struggles of limited resources, limited support and the lack of a thriving second tier in our industry.
On the 8th of July 2018, a community of local artists met to find a new way forward and the idea for RUMPUS was born: an exciting curated season of work in a new venue where artists can pool resources, collectively build audiences and grow a better ecology for creating bold, diverse and innovative work.
Exactly one year and one day later, on the 9th of July 2019, the RUMPUS facilitators who organised the first community meeting picked up the keys for the very first RUMPUS home - 100 Sixth St Bowden.
We are excited to present our inaugural 2019 season of fresh local theatre, designed to challenge, engage, stimulate and entertain Adelaide audiences.
We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of the Adelaide region in which RUMPUS is located on and we respect their spiritual relationship with their country. We pay our respects to all Elders past, present and emerging and we acknowledge that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today.
The RUMPUS Community
From the very beginning, everything about RUMPUS - its concept, modelling, philosophy and brand - have all been created by and with our community of Adelaide’s professional independent theatre companies and theatre makers, via community meetings, votes and online discussions.
This community of artists have also generously donated their time to help us in other capacities to get RUMPUS off the ground; including helping us with grant writing, picking up furniture, making surveys, lending us things, giving us things and general all round amazing support.
Companies and artists in our community include: Alexis West, Alira McKenzie, Antoine Jelk (pictured), Ashton Malcolm, Back Porch, Chrissie Page, Emma Beech, Foul Play, Hew Parham, House of Sand, isthisyours?, Jamila Main, Josie Were, Jude Henshall, Katherine Sortini, Ladylike Collective, Live in the Dark, Meg Wilson, Peter Beaglehole, Rachel Burke, Rebecca Meston, Sally Hardy, Sarah Peters, Teddy Dunn, Tiffany Lyndall-Knight, Tiny Bricks, and many more.
